Ram Charan lauds ‘Pushpa’ director’s daughter on her National Award win for Best Child Artist

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan recently opened up about his short but intense stint in politics during an episode of his hit quiz show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. Chatting with a contestant, the 81-year-old actor shared how tough it was to leave the political world behind, especially since it all started in his hometown of Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj.
“I left politics in a very emotional state,” Bachchan said in the clip. “The people there loved me a lot. I got votes and won the election. But after spending a few days there, I realized it’s a really difficult job. You have to juggle this side, that side, listen here and there—figuring out how to respond and handle everything. It’s incredibly challenging.”
Despite the struggles, Bachchan looks back on those two years as a valuable lesson. “Let me tell you, that experience was precious for me,” he added. “India’s real life happens in our villages. I learned how people there live and what they go through. And they show so much respect when someone comes to contest an election—they do it in their own heartfelt way. I’m sure you’ve seen that too.”
Bachchan’s dive into politics came in 1984, right after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination. He joined the Indian National Congress and jumped into the Lok Sabha elections from Allahabad. He won in a landslide, beating his opponent by more than 1 million votes—one of the biggest victories in Indian election history.
As a lawmaker, the superstar used his fame to spotlight cultural and social issues, shining a light on everyday problems. But things got rocky fast. In 1987, the Bofors scandal erupted, with allegations tying him to financial wrongdoing in a major arms deal. Though he was never charged, the backlash and the stress of political life pushed him to quit that same year.
Since then, Bachchan has steered clear of active politics, focusing instead on his legendary Bollywood career. He still speaks out now and then on public campaigns, but his heart remains in the movies. Fans love these glimpses into his life beyond the screen, especially on shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati.
