Diljit plays the folk singer who shook up rural Punjab in the 1980s with his bold, provocative songs about caste, desire, and the push against conservatism. Parineeti Chopra shines as his wife, Amarjot.
Chamkila started as a Dalit laborer and dreamer in Punjab, rising to fame with lyrics that captured everyday struggles and joys. The movie follows his journey to becoming a massive folk icon, only to end tragically with his unsolved assassination in 1988—he and his wife were gunned down right on stage during a performance.
What makes the soundtrack stand out? Oscar and Grammy winner A.R. Rahman composed the music, mixing Chamkila’s folk roots with fresh, modern twists. Instead of a straight-up biopic, the film weaves in musical numbers, interviews, and real-life vibes to unravel his life and the mystery of his death.
