Hollywood star Drew Barrymore recently shared the story of her own time in a rehabilitation center, saying it was the “best thing that ever happened” to her.
During an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress opened up about being sent into a rehab facility when she was 14 and staying for almost two years. She described the experience as a painful but transformative journey that helped her find courage, humor and a sense of heroism in her recovery.
The conversation happened with comedian and creator Mae Martin, who stars in Netflix’s new mystery series Wayward. The show follows a police officer investigating a troubled‑teen school in a small town, and it’s loosely modeled on Martin’s own life. Martin, who uses they/them pronouns, and Barrymore talked about how both of them were “wayward teens” and ended up in similar treatment centers as adolescents.
“I was taken away and put in a place for two years,” Barrymore told the host. “It was hard as hell, but it was the best thing that ever happened to me.” She praised Wayward for its realistic look at the troubled‑teen industry, noting that the show encourages young people to speak their truth and find strength in their struggles.
Martin added that she entered her facility at age 16 and now feels a protective urge toward young people who face early labeling. “Having been pathologized at a very young age, it’s shaped how I see things today,” she said.
Wayward is available to stream on Netflix today.
