Ed Sheeran: In the first decade of my career I was intensely unhappy

Ed Sheeran, the Grammy-winning singer, has opened up about his past struggles with work-life balance. For years, he poured everything into his music, sidelining his personal happiness. But now, with a family in the picture, he’s flipped the script.

In a candid chat with The Sun newspaper, Sheeran shared how his early career felt like non-stop grind. “In the first decade, I was intensely unhappy because I had no balance—just work, work, work,” he said. Everything skyrocketed to success, but it came at a cost: zero personal life. “Work was everything back then.”

These days, things look a lot different for the “Shape of You” star. Married to Cherry Seaborn, with daughters Lyra (five) and Jupiter (three), Sheeran has shifted gears. Family and friends now take up 70% of his time, while work fills just 30%. “Finding that balance—getting married, having a family, living around my friends—has changed everything,” he explained.

For Sheeran, true success isn’t just chart-topping hits or sold-out tours. It’s about “existing as a human being rather than just a pop star machine.” He feels settled as an artist, happy with his music and shows, but the real win is juggling dad duties and being a great husband.

Reflecting on his intense 20s, Sheeran admitted the hustle was necessary for that level of fame. “To be that successful, you have to give everything—all day, every day. But there’s a sanity limit to it.” He sees young artists pushing hard now and thinks, “That’s not me anymore.” With kids in the mix, he’s learned to ease off the accelerator. “You have to do that grind at some point, but eventually, take your foot off the gas—especially when you have children.”

Sheeran’s story is a reminder for many chasing dreams: success feels empty without balance. Fans are loving this more grounded side of the British singer-songwriter.
