On National Press Day, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged people to protect media freedom, calling the press “an indispensable force” that keeps democracy alive even when state institutions feel pressure.
Stalin said journalism is now more crucial than ever because many bodies across the country, he added, have been “bent or captured” by the Union government. He praised reporters who, despite intimidation and attempts to silence dissent, continue to cover important public stories.
The chief minister stressed that a free, independent, and vibrant media is not just a democratic ideal—it is essential for transparency and government accountability. “Without press scrutiny, democracy is severely compromised,” he warned.
Stalin reminded reporters of their historic duty to defend civil liberties and give a voice to the people, especially when dissent is discouraged. He urged the media to stand firm against suppression and safeguard the truth.
He reaffirmed the DMK party’s long‑standing support for media freedom, saying his government will keep Tamil Nadu a safe space for journalists to work without fear.
