Elizabeth Olsen won’t do films if they don’t get theatrical release

Elizabeth Olsen says she will only sign on to projects that get a real movie‑theater debut, not just a streaming release.

The Los Angeles‑based actress, best known for playing the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), told InStyle that she welcomes indie films but wants audiences to experience them together on a big screen.

“Movies should still bring people together,” Olsen said. “I don’t want a film to end up only on a stream. I think it’s important for people to gather as a community, to see other humans, be together in a space.”

She explained that while she’s comfortable with projects that may go straight to a service like Netflix, she will pass on ones that have no theatrical plan. The actress added, “I like sports because they unite people for something they’re excited about.”

After her last MCU outing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Olsen has focused on smaller projects: His Three Daughters (2023), The Assessment (2024), and the upcoming A24 romantic comedy Eternity. Only His Three Daughters was released on a streaming platform, though it also played in selected theaters for awards eligibility.

Olsen’s experience in the MCU—where she first appeared in the 2014 post‑credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier—keeps her connected to large, collaborative productions. “Making the films is fun, goofy, ridiculous—like grown‑up kids on a playground,” she said. “We’re flying, shooting things out of our hands, and I love returning to that character after more than a decade.”

She praised the community and consistency of the MCU’s studio system. “We’re hundreds of people on set working toward one goal,” she added. “The visual effects teams are artists, and the whole process is meaningful. I care about great acting, and I want everyone to do their best.”

Olsen’s stance reflects a growing shift among actors who value the communal experience of cinema. Her choice to prioritize theatrical releases may influence upcoming indie projects and how Hollywood balances streaming with traditional movie theaters.
