Smriti Irani, the actress-turned-politician who shot to fame on Indian TV, has returned to the set of her iconic show “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” after 25 years. She’s diving right back in and sharing fun glimpses of her busy shoot days.
On her official Instagram, Smriti posted a lighthearted contrast between her “expected weekend vibes” and reality. She started with a casual selfie from home, looking relaxed. Then, she switched to a video from the “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2.0” set, where she goofed around with co-stars Ritu Chaudhry Seth (Shobha Virani) and Aman Gandhi (Hrithik Virani). “Expected weekend vibes v/s reality #workisworship @ritucj @gandhi_aman_,” she captioned it, tagging her on-screen family.
In an exclusive chat with , Smriti explained why the reboot feels so fresh today. The show tackles modern topics like body shaming and ageing, making it relatable for today’s audiences, especially young viewers. “We address issues that hit close to home for everyone,” she said.
Looking back, Smriti reflected on how TV and viewer tastes have changed since the original aired in 1999. Back then, saas-bahu dramas like this didn’t have digital platforms or bold storylines. Now, it’s streaming on OTT, and she’s thrilled with the response. The show pulls in nearly 5 crore monthly viewers, about 1.5 crore daily, and 2 to 2.5 crore weekly on TV.
Even on OTT—usually a hub for youth content—the old-school drama shines. Similar shows keep viewers for 20 to 28 minutes each, but fans spend a whopping 104 minutes a week on “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2.0.” “It’s amazing how this classic concept connects with a new generation,” Smriti added.
