Farhan Akhtar-backed Manipur Film ‘Boong’ set for theatrical release after garnering fame at international film festivals

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong has wowed audiences at top international film festivals and is finally hitting theaters on September 19, 2025. Backed by Bollywood star Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment, this heartfelt coming-of-age story promises to touch your heart.

The film follows young Boong, a spirited Manipuri boy played by child actor Gugun Kipgen. He dreams of the perfect gift for his mother: bringing his missing father back home. But his innocent quest leads to something even better—a fresh start for his family. Along the way, you’ll meet memorable characters brought to life by Vikram Kochhar, Bala Hijam, Hamom Sadananda, and Jenny Khurai.

Boong has earned rave reviews from global crowds. It shone at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024, Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2024, International South Asian Film Festival Canada 2024, Berkshire International Film Festival 2024, and Indogerman Film Week, among others. The buzz started building in 2024 and keeps growing into 2025.

Excel Movies, the official distributor and production house, dropped the big release news on Instagram. "Come and say hello to Boong. Releasing in select cinemas on 19th September, 2025," Farhan Akhtar shared, hyping up fans for this Manipur cinema gem.

Gugun Kipgen’s standout performance even snagged a special mention award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). At the International South Asian Film Festival, the jury praised the film for its "powerful realism" seen through a child’s eyes—full of innocence and mischief. They called it a "wholesome yet poignant experience" that takes you on a journey you’ll remember. Boong also clinched the Excellence in Feature Filmmaking award there.
