New Delhi, India –
Late Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal received a post‑humous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 70th Filmfare Awards on Saturday.
The award was handed out by popular director Karan Johar, who praised Benegal’s unique vision and storytelling. Benegal’s daughter, Pia, accepted the honor in her father’s name and said the film community has lost a “magical” artist who touched many people personally and professionally.
Benegal, 90, passed away on December 23, 2024, at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. He was born on December 14, 1934, into a Konkani‑speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family in Hyderabad. Over almost five decades, he worked closely with actors from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and National School of Drama (NSD), including Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Amrish Puri. His films tackled social and political subjects with depth, earning him the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and India’s top cinematic honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
His funeral in Mumbai featured a gun salute and state honours. Many film stars, such as Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak, Naseeruddin Shah, Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, and Hansal Mehta, attended the service.
The 70th Filmfare Awards took place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on October 11. Actor‑host Shah Rukh Khan returned to the show after a long break, joined by Karan Johar, Akshay Kumar, and Maniesh Paul. The ceremony celebrated a century of Indian cinema and remembered icons like Benegal, whose legacy continues to inspire filmmakers worldwide.
