Mumbai – At the Yellowstone International Film Festival in Mumbai, five prominent Indian filmmakers sat down to talk openly about the art of storytelling in today’s world. The panel featured Aarti Kadav, Rohan Kanawade, Kanu Behl, Alankrita Shrivastava and Nidhi Saxena, and was led by filmmaker‑writer Hardik Mehta.
The discussion centered on the challenges they face when creating movies that feel real to audiences. They shared their personal experiences and how they keep their stories fresh while staying true to their own voices.
Aarti Kadav, known for her film Cargo and the recent drama Mrs., spoke about the hard choices behind casting. “Choosing the right actor for Sanya Malhotra’s husband in Mrs. was the toughest part,” she said. “A star might have seemed like the obvious pick, but a fresh face like Nishant Dahiya added the right touch. I even convinced an actor’s son not to take the role because it could set him back in his career.” Kadav’s story shows how a single casting decision can shape a whole film.
Other panelists talked about balancing personal vulnerability with audience expectations. They emphasized the evolving demand for authenticity in cinema, especially in an age of binge‑watching and endless content. Their remarks underscored how Bollywood now strives to create narratives that resonate with real people.
The festival day also highlighted a workshop led by celebrated acting coach Anne Moore, who taught the Stanford Meisner Technique to aspiring performers. Her interactive masterclass attracted many talent‑hungry attendees looking for practical, professional guidance.
For those who missed it, the Mrs. film premiered on 7 February 2025 on an OTT platform. A remake of the 2021 Malayalam hit The Great Indian Kitchen, the story follows Richa (played by Sanya Malhotra), a newlywed dancer who discovers the heavy burden of domestic labor in a patriarchal household and ultimately challenges the status quo. Her journey highlights everyday struggles faced by many in Indian society.
The session at the Yellowstone International Film Festival gave viewers a behind‑the‑scenes look into how Indian filmmakers aim to keep cinema relevant, genuine, and engaging for today’s audiences.
