Shivraj Singh Chouhan assesses flood damage in Jammu; announces relief measures for farmers, workers

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stepped into the flood-ravaged village of Badyal Brahmana in Jammu and Kashmir’s RS Pura sector on Friday. He promised full support from the Central government to help the flood-affected people rebuild their lives after the devastating floods.

Chouhan kicked off his visit by walking through the damaged fields, checking the destruction to standing crops firsthand. He then spoke to a big crowd of flood victims, including farmers hit hard by the disaster.

“The Central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands firmly with the people of Jammu and Kashmir during this tough time,” Chouhan assured them. He committed to providing all possible aid once the J&K government shares its damage assessment reports. Teams from key ministries—like Home Affairs, Jal Shakti, Rural Development, and Agriculture—have already surveyed the worst-hit areas and will submit their findings soon. “We won’t leave any stone unturned in delivering relief,” he added.

Back in Jammu city, Chouhan held a review meeting with J&K officials and later shared big relief announcements with the media. First up, he greenlit an immediate PM-Kisan instalment for farmers facing losses from the Jammu and Kashmir floods.

He also boosted support for workers in affected zones, adding 50 extra man-days under MGNREGA. This bumps their total to 150 days from the usual 100, giving them more work and income amid the natural calamity.

Farmers won’t suffer alone—Chouhan announced compensation for domestic animals lost to the floodwaters. For the thousands of damaged homes, he pledged quick approval for rebuilding. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, each house will get Rs 1.30 lakh for construction, plus funds for a separate toilet. Reports show around 5,000 houses damaged, and the government aims to fix them fast.

Chouhan praised Self Help Groups for their relief efforts but noted their own losses. He approved Rs 76 crore to help them recover.

On a practical note, he urged farmers to use the sand piled up in their fields from the floods. To make this easier, he called on the J&K Mining Department to relax rules for these affected landowners.

J&K has Rs 2,499 crore set aside for disaster management, which will tackle the recent floods. If more money is needed, the Centre will step in. The state will also repair damaged canals and embankments with Central help, ensuring long-term flood protection in Jammu and Kashmir.
