Hollywood actor George Clooney says he believes the Democrats’ loss in last month’s U.S. presidential election was largely due to the choice of candidates.
In a recent interview reported by Variety, Clooney reflected on his own op‑ed, published in the New York Times, in which he urged former President Joe Biden to step aside for the 2024 campaign. He has no regrets about that piece, but he now calls the decision to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris a mistake.
“When I wrote the op‑ed, I wanted a strong primary,” Clooney said. “We had a chance. I thought the message would be clearer if someone tested the waters. Kamala ran against her own past record, which made it hard for voters to see a difference.”
Clooney thinks that the debate performance between Biden and Donald Trump helped shape Hollywood’s push for a new candidate. “Biden’s showing in the first debate was disastrous," he noted. “We all saw that it hurt his chances in November.”
After his July essay, Clooney became the face of the Hollywood movement demanding a change in the Democratic ticket. In his writing he used blunt language: “We are not going to win in November with this president. We won’t win the House. We’re going to lose the Senate.”
He stressed that this view is not just his own. “This is the opinion of every senator, congress member, and governor I’ve spoken to in private—every single one of them, no matter what they say publicly.”
The actor‑filmmaker’s comments add to a growing debate over the direction of the Democratic Party as it heads toward the 2024 election.
