Mandal-Becharaji SIR turns rural Gujarat into auto hub, boosts jobs and small businesses

Gujarat’s Mandal-Becharaji Special Investment Region, or MBSIR, started as a bold idea from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has totally reshaped the rural economy in the state. What was once a bunch of quiet farming villages now buzzes as a major automobile hub, drawing in big names like Maruti Suzuki and Honda.
The Gujarat government highlighted on Sunday how MBSIR goes beyond factories—it’s sparking jobs for locals, fueling small businesses, cutting down on people leaving for work elsewhere, and lifting everyday living standards.
Take Pradyumansingh Jhala from Becharaji in Mehsana district. A few years back, he pulled in just Rs 30,000 a month from a regular job. Now, thanks to MBSIR’s growth, he owns a booming dealership for brands like JK Tyres, Bridgestone, Yokohama, and Exide, raking in Rs 3.5 crore a year. “We always had the land, but the new roads, facilities, and infrastructure made it all possible,” Jhala says. “MBSIR didn’t just transform my life—it changed our whole village.”
Small business owners feel the shift too. Sureshbhai Bazania runs a tea stall in Chandanki village, also in Mehsana. His daily take used to hover around Rs 1,000 to 1,200. With more workers flooding in and better roads connecting everything, it now hits Rs 4,000 to 5,000. “The extra money means we can give our kids a better shot at education,” he adds.
Locals say job hunting far from home, which was once the norm, has pretty much vanished. “People don’t have to pack up and leave anymore,” explains farmer and contractor Amarsinh Thakor from Sitapur village. “Companies here grab both skilled pros and everyday workers from right around us.” That ripple effect shows up everywhere—from kirana stores stocking more goods to dairies, clothing shops, and construction crews expanding fast.
The changes hit home on the social side as well. Big companies pour corporate social responsibility funds into village schools, adding smart classrooms, libraries, furniture, and uniforms. “Kids get top-notch CBSE education without ever stepping out of their villages,” says local school principal Dineshbhai Prajapati.
Anganwadi worker Gopiben Prajapati points out how rising incomes lead to real improvements in healthcare, cleaner sanitation, and smoother roads. Becharaji, famous before as a pilgrimage spot, now stands as a hotspot for opportunity, according to former sarpanch Devangbhai Pandya. “MBSIR blends massive industries with everyday enterprises, creating a real hub.”
To spotlight this success in Gujarat’s industrial and rural revival, the state government plans to showcase MBSIR at special sessions during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conferences. The kickoff event runs October 9 to 10 in Mehsana, zeroing in on fresh investment chances and job growth tied to the region’s boom.
