Guillermo del Toro will take the stage at the 2026 Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards on March 7 to accept the Filmmaker Award, the ceremony’s top honor that spotlights directors who know how sound shapes a film’s story. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news in early October.
Del Toro’s filmography is a kaleidoscope of memorable visuals and powerful sound. Critics often cite his early work, Cronos (1993) and Mimic (1997), before showing the world the dark fairy‑tale world of Pan Labyrinth (2006). He later turned to blockbuster fantasy with Hellboy (2004), high‑octane action in Pacific Rim (2013), gothic romance in Crimson Peak (2015), and the Oscar‑winning romance The Shape of Water (2017). Each film relies on atmospheric audio to deepen the viewer’s experience, a fact that the CAS Board highlighted as a key reason for the award.
The award’s history is rich. Past winners include Denis Villeneuve, J.J. Abrams, George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, Joe Wright, Jon Favreau, Taylor Hackford, Jonathan Demme, Richard Donner, Rob Marshall, Edward Zwick, and Quentin Tarantino—names synonymous with cinematic storytelling. Peter Kurland, CAS President, praised Del Toro’s “masterful use of sound to build atmosphere, suspense and wonder,” calling him a model for “sound‑savvy directors” in the industry.
Del Toro himself emphasized the teamwork behind every film. “Audio‑visual entertainment—telling stories with images and sound—requires the most careful composition and exacting standards to deliver a memorable experience in every theatre and every home,” he said. “It is an honour to be recognised by peers and admired colleagues.”
The CAS Awards celebrate seven categories of sound mixing excellence, and the society, founded in 1964, has long championed the vital role of audio in film and television.
