‘Hot dog populism’: Europe backs ban on vegetarian protein product labels

EU lawmakers moved forward on a new rule that bars the use of the term “veggie burger” and tightens how foods like steak, escalope and sausage can be marketed. The change is part of a broader effort in the European Union to protect farmers and ensure that only products containing real meat can carry those familiar names.

Under the proposal, a burger that is purely plant‑based cannot be called a “veggie burger” or any other meat‑related label. The same rule applies to other common dishes—steak, escalope and sausage—unless they actually contain meat. The intention is to prevent consumers from being misled and to give farmers a fair chance in the market.

The vote took place on Wednesday, and lawmakers hope the law will clarify food labeling standards across all EU member states. If it moves through the remaining legislative steps, the rule will bring clearer distinctions between plant‑based options and real‑meat products, helping shoppers make informed choices and supporting the agricultural sector.
