Tragic Death of Zubeen Garg: Assam’s Beloved Singer Loses Life in Singapore Scuba Diving Accident
Guwahati, Assam: The music world is reeling from the shocking death of Zubeen Garg, the popular Assamese singer known for his soulful hits. The 52-year-old star passed away on Friday during a scuba diving mishap in Singapore. He was there for the Northeast India Festival (NEIF), all set to light up the stage with his performance.
News of Zubeen Garg’s sudden demise spread like wildfire, leaving fans heartbroken across India. Social media exploded with emotional tributes, while crowds gathered outside his Guwahati home in Assam. Family and friends arrived, and the air was thick with grief as people mourned the loss of their icon.
In his hometown, visuals showed residents with tear-streaked faces, struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. Zubeen Garg, often called the voice of Assam after the legendary Bhupen Hazarika, touched millions with his music. His death feels like a void that no one can fill.
Manash Baruah, a childhood friend and fellow musician from Jorhat, shared his pain with . "We grew up together, making music side by side," he said. "This news hits hard—it’s so sudden. Zubeen was on the rise, and now he’s gone too soon. Everyone knows him; he’s irreplaceable. After Bhupen Hazarika, Zubeen Garg was the one, and there’s no one like him."
Hiru Dutta, who now lives in Zubeen Garg’s old family home, called it a "godsend" to stay there. "His career kicked off right here," Dutta recalled. He fondly remembered how the singer would drop by during Assam visits, sharing meals and stories with the family.
A devoted fan from Assam opened up about her raw emotions. "I was at school, then work, when I heard. I couldn’t believe it—I just broke down crying," she said. "I called friends for confirmation. Zubeen was like our soul; he meant everything."
Leaders and artists rushed to offer condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his shock: "Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow and said he’s coordinating with India’s High Commissioner to Singapore, Shilpak N Ambule, to bring Zubeen Garg’s body back home quickly.
The Northeast India Festival issued a statement explaining the incident. Zubeen Garg faced breathing issues while scuba diving. Rescuers gave him CPR on the spot and rushed him to Singapore General Hospital. Doctors fought hard in the ICU, but he was declared dead around 2:30 PM IST.
