Piyush Goyal slams Mahagathbandhan’s poll promises; lauds Bihar’s development under NDA govt

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal fired back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Mahagathbandhan coalition in a fiery speech at NDTV’s Bihar Power Play conclave on Saturday. The event, held just before the Bihar Assembly elections, gave Goyal a platform to defend his party’s record and attack the opposition’s promises.

Goyal called the opposition’s pledges “hollow” and described its leaders as “symbols of a failed experiment.” He said the Mahagathbandhan’s chief candidate, Tejashwi Yadav, and Rahul Gandhi were products of politics that had not delivered results. “Those who fail the exam keep crying all the time,” Goyal said, emphasizing the need for practical action instead of empty rhetoric.

When RJD’s Akhilesh Singh Patel accused the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of copying the Mahagathbandhan’s manifesto, Goyal dismissed the claim. He pointed out that the NDA has already promised one crore jobs—both government and private—and has a clear plan to bring technology firms and build industrial parks in Bihar. “Could someone from Bihar go to Japan?” he asked, challenging the idea that migration is the only path to opportunity. Instead, he highlighted how the state’s youth are staying and building careers locally.

Goyal credited the “double‑engine government” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for a surge in development across Bihar. He noted major infrastructure wins: flyovers in Patna, the upcoming metro system, new highways, and improved rural roads. The minister also highlighted economic milestones such as 14 new ethanol plants and the launch of the Makhana Board, citing these as evidence of value‑added growth.

Re‑affirming the NDA’s job promise, Goyal contrasted it with the Mahagathbandhan’s 2.5‑crore job pledge, calling the latter unfeasible under budget constraints. “We have a practical roadmap to fulfil one crore jobs,” he said, stressing that investment in industry will create a cycle of employment.

Addressing safety concerns, Goyal said that better law enforcement has increased crime reporting. He added that formerly, people were reluctant to file complaints, but now women walk safely at night and farmers report higher incomes.

The speech underscores the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections as a key test for the NDA’s developmental narrative against a backdrop of opposition promises and promises of industrial expansion and job creation.
