In Mumbai, a group of popular Indian musicians including Shaan, Alisha Chinai, Shalmali Kholgade, Shamir Tandon, and Mame Khan have joined forces to honor the legendary Kishore Kumar. These artists will perform together on the new SonyLIV show “Ek aur Baar Kishore Kumar,” celebrating the timeless voice of one of Bollywood’s greatest singers.
The musicians recently chatted with about how Kishore Kumar shaped their careers and why this tribute feels so special. Shaan, known for his smooth vocals, explained how Kishore’s energy changed everything for him. “Who I am today—my singing style, everything I’ve learned—comes straight from him,” Shaan said. “His aura, stage presence, and performance magic inspired me so much. I see myself as his student, and I’m not alone; countless artists in India feel the same. When this show came up, I jumped at the chance.”
Alisha Chinai, a pop icon from the ’80s, got personal about her time working with Kishore. She sang alongside him in the hit film “Mr. India” for the romantic track “Kaate Nahin Kat Te.” “I feel so lucky to have shared that moment,” she recalled. “The excitement hit me right away—it was inspiring to watch him sing so effortlessly. That epic memory sticks with me forever.”
Shalmali Kholgade, with her fresh take on playback singing, admitted she rediscovered Kishore’s magic while preparing for the show. “Kishore Kumar is unforgettable—no one can erase that,” she said. “When Shamir reached out, I knew of him but hadn’t dived deep into his songs. Once I started listening, I thought, ‘Oh my God, what have I been missing?’ This project lets today’s generation connect with his legendary voice in a new way.”
Mame Khan, the folk singer blending Rajasthani traditions with modern sounds, traced his love for Kishore back to his childhood. “My dad introduced me to Kishore Da’s music when I was a kid,” he shared. “In our village, we had no electricity 20-25 years ago, so we’d tune into the radio. My father, Ustad Rana Khan, sang with a similar expressive style and even spoke like him. One day, he told me, ‘Listen closely—this is Kishore Da.’ That moment never left me.”
Shamir Tandon, the composer behind many chart-toppers, wrapped up the conversation with deep gratitude. “I feel truly blessed, like God’s hand is guiding me,” he said. “We all grew up on his songs, and he inspired me to ditch my banking job young and chase music. Now, getting to reimagine and revive his tracks is an incredible honor.”
This tribute show highlights Kishore Kumar’s enduring legacy in Indian music, bringing his hits to life for fans old and new.
