Kolkata, Dec 13 (LatestNewsX) – In the Canning area of West Bengal, workers of the Trinamool Congress are accused of beating a BJP booth president with the butt of a gun. The alleged assault happened Friday night in Dharmatala village, under Gopalpur Panchayat in the South 24 Parganas district. Police confirmed the incident on Saturday.
The BJP official who was injured is identified as Shankar Mandal, who is now in critical condition at a private clinic in Kolkata. Following the attack, the Canning police station opened an inquiry into the matter.
Local reports say a BJP meeting had been held a few days earlier in Dharmatala, led by Mandal. During that gathering, a minor disagreement erupted with nearby Trinamool Congress members. Mandal returned to the village on Friday to conduct another party meeting, and it is alleged that Trinamool Congress workers assaulted him, striking him with a gun butt among other blows.
Other BJP workers rushed Mandal to the Baruipur Sub‑Divisional Hospital for first‑aid care and later moved him to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. He was ultimately transferred to a private hospital where he remains under treatment.
The BJP blasted the incident, pointing the finger squarely at the ruling Trinamool Congress. “On Friday night, one of our booth presidents was beaten up by miscreants of the ruling party in Dharmatala village. Not only that, he was brutally attacked with shovels and the butt of a gun. He is seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment at a private nursing home. He is virtually fighting for his life,” said Biswanath Patra, vice‑president of the BJP’s Joynagar organisational district.
In contrast, the Trinamool Congress denied any involvement. Saokat Molla, MLA from Canning East, stated: “No one from the ruling party is involved in this incident. This is an internal conflict within the BJP. The police administration should conduct a proper investigation, arrest those responsible and ensure exemplary punishment. The BJP’s support base is slipping, which is why they are making false allegations.”
Canning Sub‑Divisional Police Officer Ramkumar Mandal announced that the victim has filed a formal complaint at the Canning police station. “An investigation has been initiated based on the complaint. The probe is currently at a preliminary stage, and we are hopeful that those involved in the incident will be arrested at the earliest,” he said.
