Mumbai, Oct 17 – The film and television community in Mumbai gathered on Monday to honour the late veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who died on Sunday at age 68. Family friends and industry colleagues streamed into a prayer meeting set up by the Dheer family to remember his many years of work on screen.
The ceremony drew a who’s‑who of Bollywood. Filmmaker Rohit Shetty, actors Sharad Saxena, Suresh Oberoi, Esha Deol, Zayed Khan, Tanvi Azmi, Mohit Raina, Aditya Pancholi, Mukesh Rishi, Puneet Issar, Ashok Pandit and Mukesh Khanna were all present. Jackie Shroff, Johnny Lever, Ramesh Taurani, actress Sheeba with husband Akashdeep, Ranjeet, Rajat Bedi, and others joined to offer their final respects.
Dheer was best known for playing Karna in the iconic television series “Mahabharat,” produced by B. R. Chopra. His career spanned over four decades, covering popular shows like “Chandrakanta,” “Bado Bahu,” and “Sasural Simar Ka,” as well as Hindi films such as “Baadshah,” “Soldier,” and “Zameen.” He worked steadily even while battling cancer and undergoing surgery earlier this year.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer; son, Niketan Dheer—who is also an actor famous for his role as Thangbali in “Chennai Express”—and daughter‑in‑law, Kratika Sengar, a television actress. The family also mourns their three‑year‑old granddaughter, Devika.
Pankaj Dheer left a lasting legacy in Indian cinema and television, and his passing has deeply affected colleagues and fans across Mumbai and beyond.
