Former top officials from the Joe Biden administration are advocating for stronger ties between the United States and India. They describe India as “one of the United States’ most important global partners” and emphasize the need to deepen the relationship.
In an article for Foreign Affairs magazine, ex-National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and former Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell warned that current tensions could lead to a rift that would be hard to mend. They urged the U.S. to bring India closer, instead of pushing it away.
The officials pointed out that misunderstandings, missteps, and missed opportunities have kept the U.S.-India relationship fragile. They warned that if the trend continues, the U.S. might drive India into the arms of its rivals, which would be risky for American interests.
They also criticized the approach of the Trump administration, saying Washington should not treat India and Pakistan as linked issues. Instead, U.S. policy should focus on building strong, independent relations with both countries. While the U.S. has security concerns in Pakistan, especially around terrorism and nuclear proliferation, its main focus should remain on India’s growing importance.
Both Sullivan and Campbell highlighted that Donald Trump’s often theatrical approach can sometimes lead to dealmaking. Despite some setbacks, they suggest establishing a 10-year “strategic alliance” with India. This would create a stronger foundation based on mutual commitments in areas like technology, defense, supply chains, intelligence, and global problem-solving — without necessarily forming a traditional military alliance.
They also emphasized that a strategic partnership does not mean losing sovereignty. India and the U.S. are proud, independent nations, and their alliance would be about working together toward shared goals, not sacrificing their independence.
In an interview with PBS NewsHour, Kurt Campbell expressed concern about the current state of U.S.-India relations. He mentioned being shocked and worried by recent changes, noting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is sending a clear message to the United States: India has other options.
This call for stronger U.S.-India relations comes at a crucial time. Experts believe that deepening ties could significantly benefit both countries as they face global challenges together.
