James Cameron Fires Back at Amy Poehler’s Savage Golden Globes Jab on His Marriage

In a candid chat with The New York Times, the Titanic mastermind labeled the comedian’s 2013 remark an ignorant dig that crossed the line at an event meant to honor filmmakers, not roast them, according to Variety.

Poehler unleashed the punchline during her opening monologue alongside co-host Tina Fey at the 2013 Golden Globes, where Kathryn Bigelow—Cameron’s ex-wife—was up for best director for Zero Dark Thirty. Nodding to the buzz around the film’s torture scenes, Poehler quipped, When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.

The line stunned the crowd, with cameras zooming in on Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain‘s jaw-dropping reaction of pure shock.

Reflecting on it now, Cameron told The Times, Amy Poehlers remark was an ignorant dig, at an event which is supposed to be a celebration of cinema and filmmakers, not a roast. Im pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far. The fact that people found it funny shows exactly what they think of me, even though they have no idea who I am or how I work.

He revisited the rivalry-fueled backstory too, recalling how Hollywood pitted him against Bigelow during the 2009-2010 awards showdown between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. Bigelow triumphed, snagging the best director Oscar while her film claimed best picture.

I was the first one on my feet applauding, Cameron shared about her win. Kathryn and I thought the whole meta-narrative around us was pretty funny at first. I was a little concerned that it would just take away from her credibility as a filmmaker. It started to turn into a conversation that wasnt about her film, and that bothered both of us.
