Jennifer Lopez has always felt like she had to fight to prove she’s a serious actress, no matter how big her singing and dancing career got. In a recent chat on CBS News Sunday Morning, the star opened up about the challenges of breaking out of that “singer-dancer” box.
“People, when they see you first as one thing, it’s hard for them to see you as something else,” Lopez told host Lee Cowan. “You just have to show them. You can’t let that discourage you.”
Lopez, who’s built an impressive acting resume alongside her music hits, admitted she still battles that underdog vibe sometimes. “At first? At first—and maybe always. A little bit,” she said. “Or maybe it’s just me in my own head. I’ve always felt a bit of the underdog. Definitely misunderstood.”
She gets why fans and critics get confused about who she really is. Being in the spotlight means people make quick judgments, she explained. “But I stay steady,” Lopez added. “And that’s the most important thing, I think. I don’t change. I grow, but I don’t change.”
Cowan pointed out her work with Hollywood heavyweights like Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, George Clooney, and Robin Williams—how could anyone doubt her talent? Lopez just laughed and said, “I don’t know.”
Her acting chops have earned real recognition, too. Lopez snagged Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her breakout role in the 1997 biopic Selena, and for Best Supporting Actress in the 2019 hit Hustlers. That same film also brought her nods from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Independent Spirit Awards.
Now, Lopez is back on the big screen in Kiss of the Spider Woman, a fresh adaptation of the 1976 novel and its Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Directed by Bill Condon—the guy behind the Oscar-sweeping 2003 musical Chicago, which took home six Academy Awards including Best Picture—the movie had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. It hits theaters on October 10, giving fans another chance to see Lopez shine as an actress.
