Hollywood actor Johnny Depp is on the brink of a major return to the big screen. He’s slated to headline “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” a new Paramount Pictures adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic holiday tale. The film should hit theaters on November 13, 2026.
Ti West, known for his work in horror, will direct the project, which was written by Nathaniel Halpern. They’ve also brought Andrea Riseborough on board as a co‑star. Emma Watts is the producer, and the film’s executive production is handled by Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman.
In the story, Depp steps into the shoes of Ebenezer Scrooge—a grumpy, money‑obsessed businessman in 19th‑century London. The plot follows the famous ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future who visit Scrooge in a bid to steer him away from a fate of eternal regret.
The role of Scrooge has been celebrated in many films over the years, including Alastair Sim’s 1951 version and Bill Murray’s parodic take, “Scrooged,” in 1988. Other notable adaptations include the 1992 “A Muppet Christmas Carol” starring Michael Caine and Jim Carrey’s 2009 “A Christmas Carol.”
Meanwhile, director Robert Eggers is also developing a separate “Christmas Carol” movie for Warner Bros., with Willem Dafoe eyeing the lead role. Depp’s return to a major studio follows his 2018 role in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” That project was cut short after Depp lost a libel lawsuit related to allegations of domestic abuse involving his ex‑wife Amber Heard.
Since then, Depp has taken on smaller independent projects, most recently filming the thriller “Day Drinker” with Penelope Cruz for Lionsgate. That movie is also expected to premiere in 2026.
With a star‑studded production team, a classic story, and a well‑timed release, “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol” looks poised to capture audiences’ holiday hearts this season.
