Hollywood filmmaker Judd Apatow is reflecting on his early days in Los Angeles, sharing his memories in an interview with People magazine. The 57‑year‑old director‑producer, known for hits like The 40‑Year‑Old Virgin, talked about the time he and his then‑roommate, now comedy star Adam Sandler, were hustling in a small apartment, writing jokes and performing at improv shows every night.
Even before Sandler landed a spot on Saturday Night Live, Apatow sensed his friend was destined for stardom. “We all knew Adam was going to make it,” he said. “He was funny, charismatic, and we were just trying to write jokes and get on stage. We had no responsibilities – just a dream.”
Sandler first auditioned for SNL in 1990 and joined the cast in 1991, staying until 1995. According to Apatow, the moment Sandler announced he had been hired was a turning point. “One day he said, ‘I’m going to audition for Saturday Night Live,’ and the next day he told us, ‘I got it’—and the apartment was all mine,” Apatow recalled.
Apatow’s new book, Comedy Nerd: A Lifelong Obsession in Stories and Pictures, releases on October 28, 2025. The memoir bundles fresh photos, letters, scripts, and draft notes that trace his decades‑long comedy career and highlight the friendships that have shaped it, from Adam Sandler to Steve Carell. The book promises a rare look at the behind‑the‑scenes moments that helped define modern Hollywood comedy.
