Julia Roberts concerned over young people’s use of mobile phones

Los Angeles – Academy‑Award winner Julia Roberts said on Sunday that she worries about kids spending too much time on their phones. “Our brains just can’t keep up with all that information,” the “Pretty Woman” star told Sunday Times Culture. She speaks from the experience of watching her 20‑year‑old twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, and 18‑year‑old son Henry grow up in the digital age.

Roberts, who is married to Daniel Moder, believes the constant stream of screens is overwhelming, especially for young minds that still need fresh, real‑world experiences. “We’re trying to keep them grounded in nature and real conversation instead of endless scrolling,” she said.

In a broader conversation about the rise of online misogyny and the “manosphere,” Roberts expressed relief that her boys haven’t fallen into those negative arenas. “I’m proud of my sons – they’re curious, confident, and I don’t see the game of cruelty in their lives,” she added.

She also argued that the idea of a widening generational gap is exaggerated. “Every generation talks about how different the old days are, but we’re actually more connected than ever,” she said, laughing. “I love being around young people and seeing what they bring to the table.”

At a recent school parent meeting, Roberts spoke up about the challenges parents face with their teens. “Kids can be overwhelmed by too many phones, inappropriate music, and pressure from peers. But some parents really step up and say, ‘I love teens!’,” she said. “That really shows we’re missing out when we think we know everything.”

Roberts noted that becoming a parent changed how she views her own work. In promoting her latest film, After the Hunt, she explained that playing Alma forced her to confront her own comfort zone. “I realized I couldn’t take on a new role unless I was fully present at home first,” she said. “It’s about balancing the comfort of family with the excitement of the set.”

As Hollywood’s biggest‑budget actress, Roberts’ comments on digital overwhelm, teen wellbeing and parenting are resonating with audiences. Her candid voice reminds fans that staying connected to kids – both online and offline – is a juggling act that everyone can learn from.
