Erin Doherty just made history at the 2024 Emmy Awards with her breakout win for the Netflix hit series Adolescence. The British actress snagged her first-ever Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, thanks to her gripping role as psychologist Briony Ariston in Episode 3. It was also her debut nomination, marking a huge milestone in her career.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Doherty kept it real and fun. "So it looks like I’m just going to be banging on about Adolescence and Owen Cooper for the rest of my life. Which, you know, there are worse things," she joked. She praised the entire team behind the show, calling it a true team effort. But she saved special shoutouts for co-stars Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters, saying, "You are generosity personified." Doherty wrapped up by thanking her girlfriend, Sinead Donnelly: "And Sinead, thank you for making me the happiest person in the world. I love you with everything I’ve got."
The night got even more exciting for Adolescence. Fifteen-year-old Owen Cooper became the youngest male actor to ever win an Emmy! He took home the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series award for his powerful performance in the psychological crime drama. The series didn’t stop there—writers Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham also won for Outstanding Writing in a Limited or Anthology Series.
What’s Adolescence all about? This four-part Netflix thriller dives deep into the life of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, a schoolboy arrested for murder. But forget the usual whodunit— the show explores the tough "why" behind his dark path. Stephen Graham stars as Jamie’s dad, Christine Tremarco plays his mom, and Amelie Pease is his sister. It’s a raw look at family, trauma, and teenage struggles that’s hooked viewers worldwide.
No wonder Adolescence is one of Netflix’s biggest successes. In its first three months, it racked up over 141 million views, landing as the platform’s second-most-watched series ever, right behind Wednesday, per Deadline. If you haven’t binge-watched it yet, now’s the time—it’s Emmy gold for a reason!
