Actor and politician Kamal Haasan shared his deep shock over a tragic stampede at a rally for TVK chief and actor Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident claimed 31 lives and injured dozens more, turning a massive gathering into chaos.
In a heartfelt post on X, Haasan wrote, “My heart trembles. The news coming from Karur brings shock and sorrow. I am at a loss for words to express my deepest condolences to the innocent people who lost their lives trapped in the crowd congestion.” He called on the Tamil Nadu government to provide proper medical treatment for survivors and fair relief for those affected.
Officials confirmed that overcrowding at the Vijay rally sparked the panic and stampede. Around 31 people died, and 58 others suffered injuries, with many fainting and rushing to nearby hospitals. Sources point to the huge crowd as the main trigger for the Tamil Nadu stampede tragedy.
DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur on Chief Minister MK Stalin’s orders. Speaking to reporters, Balaji said, “Till now, 31 people have died in the stampede, and 58 people have been admitted to the hospital. After the incident, the CM immediately enquired and ordered the district collector, SP, and me to rush to the hospital, advising us to call extra doctors and provide proper treatment.” He added that Stalin plans to visit Karur on Sunday to meet victims and their families. Balaji also noted instructions for private hospitals to offer free care—no charges for the injured. Currently, 46 people are in private hospitals, and 12 are at the government facility.
Tamil Nadu’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Davidson Devarsirvatham, told there’s a chance the death toll could exceed 30. “I am on my way to Karur to inspect the site,” he said.
Chief Minister MK Stalin responded quickly, holding an urgent meeting with officials at the Secretariat. In an earlier X post, he mentioned contacting former minister V Senthilbalaji, minister Subramanian Ma, and the district collector to ensure immediate treatment for those overcome by the crowd. The Karur rally stampede highlights the risks of large events, and authorities are now focusing on support for victims and preventing future incidents.
