Mumbai, Oct 8 – Bollywood’s superstar filmmaker Karan Johar marked a milestone this week, celebrating 45 years of his production house, Dharma Productions.
The launch of the banner took place in 1980, but the real spark came in 1976 when Karan’s father, Yash Johar, founded the company. After Yash’s death in 2004, Karan took the helm and turned the studio into a major name in Indian cinema.
To honor 45 years of movies, Karan and Dharma posted a video montage on Instagram. The clip pulled scenes from hits like Kuch Kuch Hot Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dostana, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Kesari, Jigra, Devara, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kill and the newest flick Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The text ran over the footage, saying “What began in 1980. Still continues. 45 years of serving wholesome entertainment. With stories that feel like… With pyaar & dosti feels like… With drama that feels like… With action that feels like and with new stories that feel like… 45 years of Dharma.” The caption added, “45 years of storytelling with pyaar, dosti, family & emotions as the main characters. Thank you for being a part of our family, a part of our cinematic journey! #45YearsofDharma.”
Karan also shared the video on his Instagram stories and simply wrote, “45 years with three orange heart emojis,” reflecting the celebratory mood.
Dharma Productions’ debut film was Dostana (1977), a hit starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman. Since then, the banner has produced classics such as Agneepath, which earned a National Film Award for Bachchan, and cult‑favorite Muqaddar Ka Faisla. Over the decades, it has teamed with Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, bringing fans blockbusters and memorable stories.
The celebration is a reminder of how Karan Johar and Dharma Productions have shaped modern Indian film—combining romance, friendship, family drama, and action, all wrapped in the emotion that audiences love. As the industry looks to the future, the studio’s 45‑year journey continues to inspire new stories across Bollywood.
