On Monday, Mumbai’s film world buzzed when Karan Johar thanked his “bhai,” Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan (SR K), for his warm endorsement of Homebound.
SR K had praised the film on Wednesday, calling it “gentle, honest and soulful” and applauding the creative team for making something “so human and engaging.” He added, “You have won hearts everywhere by creating something truly special! @ghaywan #Ishaan Khatter @vishaljethwa06 #JanhviKapoor #Karan Johar @adarpoonawalla @apoorvamehta18”.
In a quick Instagram Story, KJo shared the post and wrote, “Bhai, love you and thank you so much for supporting our film, means the world. So glad you watched it and giving you all the love right back”.
Homebound follows two friends from a modest North Indian village—one a Dalit, the other a Muslim—who dream of joining the police force to earn the respect that society has denied them. As their ambitions pull them closer, they confront entrenched caste and religious biases that test both their goals and their friendship.
The story draws inspiration from a real incident featured in a 2020 New York Times article about the migrant crisis during the COVID lockdown. The film debuted in the “Un Certain Regard” section of Cannes 2025, where it received a standing ovation that lasted several minutes, underscoring its emotional resonance.
Submitting Homebound as India’s entry for the upcoming Academy Awards is significant, given how rare it is for Indian films to be nominated in the Best International Feature category.
Meanwhile, SR K’s next project arrives with the film ‘King’.
