Powerball drawing jackpot surges to $1.50B — 5th largest in history

The chance to walk away with more than a billion dollars is real this weekend: the Saturday Powerball drawing has pushed the jackpot up to an eye‑popping $1.5 billion. The lump‑sum payout comes in at $689.3 million, making it only the fifth biggest prize ever in the game’s history.

This jackpot is set to deliver the ultimate windfall,” said Matt Strawn, chair of the Powerball Product Group and chief executive of the Iowa Lottery, in a recent statement. “The jackpot grows with every $2 ticket sold, and a portion of each ticket supports local public programs and services. We encourage everyone to have fun and play responsibly.”

Players seeking the life‑changing prize must match all five white balls and the red Powerball number. The drawing will take place at 10:59 p.m. in Tallahassee, Florida, and will be streamed live on the Powerball website for those who prefer to watch from home.

The odds of hitting the jackpot are a daunting 1 in 292 million, according to Powerball’s own prize chart. With the jackpot now on its 45th draw in the current streak, it holds the record for the most consecutive drawings that have not produced a winner.

Meanwhile, Wednesday’s draw produced a total of six winners who hit the $1 million Match‑5 prize. Three of those winners were from New York, having bought their tickets in Elmont, Newburgh and Astoria.

The last time a jackpot was claimed was September 6, when two tickets split a staggering $1.787 billion prize – the second‑largest U.S. lottery payout ever.
