Hollywood actress Keira Knightley says she’s banned social media at home to keep her children safe from the online world.
The 40‑year‑old mother of nine‑year‑old Edie and five‑year‑old Delilah – who lives with husband James Righton – told BBC Radio 4 that unregulated online spaces are “terrifying”.
“Once kids enter places where we can’t see what they’re looking at, we lose a layer of protection,” Knightley said.
“We’ve set a firm no‑social‑media rule. If we can’t monitor what they’re doing, we don’t let them use devices.”
She admitted she isn’t sure how long she’ll keep the rule in place.
When asked about parenting practices at her children’s school, Knightley noted that many parents adopt similar measures, but solutions can vary by year group. “I’d love clearer regulation so the burden isn’t solely on parents,” she added.
Knightley also addressed a separate controversy involving the Audible version of Harry Potter. She stated she was unaware of protests against the series and apologized. “I wasn’t aware of the boycott when I signed on to voice Dolores Umbridge,” she said to Decider.
She urged fans to respect differing views. “We’re all living in a time where we must learn to coexist, even with very different opinions,” Knightley said.
The actress echoed calls for respectful dialogue, hoping people find common ground amid heated debates.
