Mumbai, Oct 21 () – Indian cinema has been a vibrant industry for more than 112 years, yet no Indian feature film has won an Oscar. The latest hope comes from Homebound, chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. Filmmaker Kiran Rao, who celebrated her recent success with Laapataa Ladies, spoke about the challenges Indian films face on the international stage.
Kiran said she sees no deliberate bias from the Academy, but notes that each country looks at movies through its own cultural lens. “A film can be appreciated in India but still miss the Academy’s list of ‘must‑see’ titles,” she explained. “It’s as if voters are already pulling back against the style of Indian storytelling.”
She added that India produces a wide range of films and remains confident that one day a movie will win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. “I have great hopes for Homebound this year,” she said. “It’s a strong choice that could resonate with voters. The Oscars require a whole ecosystem – distribution, marketing, and timing – that we rarely plan for. We usually make films that speak to our own audiences and the ideas we want to share.”
Kiran highlighted that the Oscar ecosystem can feel foreign to Indian filmmakers and that achieving a win will need both industry understanding and audience support. “We got an Academy Award at the International Academy in Japan, and that surprise win showed that even if a film isn’t a blockbuster abroad, it can still earn recognition,” she said. “Awards reflect both audience tastes and the film’s craft. I believe the day will come.”
Her optimism underscores a broader belief that Indian cinema can reach the world stage, one screening and one award at a time.
