Mumbai – Bollywood legend Pankaj Dheer passed away on October 15, 2023, at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer. The veteran actor, best known for playing Karna in the classic TV series Mahabharat, left a nation of fans and fellow artists in shock.
His family voiced their grief publicly on social media. Daughter‑in‑law Kratika Sengar posted a photo of a lit Diwali lamp and wrote, “Only when you lose someone you love do you realise how heavy the festivals can feel.” The post echoed the deep sorrow felt by the Dheer family during the holiday celebrations.
Earlier in the month, Dheer underwent surgery as part of his treatment. Despite the illness, the actor kept working, appearing in films such as Baadshah, Soldier and Zameen, and in TV hits like Chandrakanta, Bado Bahu and Sasural Simar Ka.
The Indian film and television fraternity turned out in Mumbai on October 17 to pay their last respects at a prayer meeting organized by the Dheer family. Industry peers, including filmmaker Rohit Shetty, actors Suresh Oberoi, Isha Deol, Zayed Khan, Tanvi Azmi, Mukesh Rishi, Puneet Issar, Ashok Pandit, Mukesh Khanna, and many others, gathered to honor his legacy.
Pankaj Dheer is survived by his wife Anita, his son Niketan Dheer—who stars in the film Chennai Express—and daughter‑in‑law Kratika, as well as a three‑year‑old granddaughter, Devika. The Indian film community mourns the loss of a dedicated performer whose four‑decade career shaped Bollywood and television alike.
