Playback tenor Kumar Sanu celebrated a court win that protects his unique identity.

The veteran singer posted a photo on Instagram this Sunday, holding a white tee that read “Follow your own path.” He thanked his lawyer, Sana Raees Khan, for “masterful arguments” that helped the court rule in his favor.

Kumar Sanu said, “I’m deeply grateful to my advocate, Sana Raees Khan, for her powerful, masterful arguments that led to this significant victory. Thank you, Hon’ble Delhi High Court, for recognizing and upholding my personality rights.”

The singer noted the decision is more than a personal win—it sets a precedent for protecting artists’ names, voices, and likenesses. He added, “This landmark judgment safeguards every artist’s identity, voice, and creative expression.”

What the case was about

In October 2023, Kumar Sanu filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking protection for his “personality and publicity rights.” The suit challenged the unauthorised use of his name, voice, vocal style, mannerisms, images, caricatures, likeness, and signature by third parties. The allegations included commercial exploitation through GIFs, audio‑video clips, AI‑cloned voice and face morphing, and merchandise that could dilute his brand.

The court granted an interim injunction to stop the misuse of his persona. It ordered digital platforms, AI developers, and e‑commerce sites to remove content that mimics his voice or likeness. The ruling also required these platforms to preserve related data for future review.

Why it matters

Kumar Sanu’s victory is a milestone for artists everywhere. It confirms that creators can legally defend their identity against black‑mail, forgery and unauthorized digital copies. The decision shows the courts are taking the growing threat of AI‑generated likenesses seriously.

With the rise of AI‑generated voices and changing online marketplaces, this ruling delivers a clear message: artists’ expressive rights are enforceable, and the law will protect them. Kumar Sanu’s case may become a guiding example for future cases involving creative works and digital impersonation.
