‘Chaiwala’ became PM because of the Constitution, says Chandrababu Naidu

In a lively conference on the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu highlighted how the Constitution can lift anyone from humble beginnings to high office. He famously remarked that Narendra Modi rose from a chaiwala to Prime Minister because of India’s founding legal document.

Naidu, the leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), praised Modi for his effort to make India the top country in the world. He also welcomed comments from the Chief Justice of India, Justice B. R. Gavai, who hails from the nearby town of Amaravati in Maharashtra, and from Chief Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Speaking in front of judges and advocates, Naidu admired Justice Gavai’s humility and his strong emphasis on equality. “CJI Justice Gavai is a kind man who delivers decisions that stay in people’s memory,” he said. He added that both the judiciary and the Constitution are pillars that support the state’s governance.

Naidu stressed that recent reforms have shifted people’s mindset, especially regarding youth. “Many countries lack young talent, but India has a vast pool,” he told the audience. He is optimistic that by 2047 India will wield significant global influence.

He also highlighted the role of the courts in correcting societal mistakes and defending democracy. “Social media turned everyone into an editor, but we must keep the nation first,” he warned. In a nod to the democratic ideal, Naidu reminded listeners that the one‑person‑one‑vote system, a gift from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, ensures equal rights for all Indians regardless of wealth or gender.

Naidu emphasised the need for economic and social equality and the importance of public policy in achieving it. “I plan to build a healthy, wealthy, and happy society and am calling on everyone to cooperate,” he concluded.

The conference showcased the powerful mix of law, leadership, and vision that defines modern Andhra Pradesh and the broader Indian democracy.
