ICAP demonstrates high inter-ministerial, cross-sectoral collaboration in laying out actionable pathways: Bhupender Yadav

India Celebrates World Ozone Day: Key Highlights from Environment Minister’s Address

On World Ozone Day, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in pushing forward the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP). Speaking at the 31st World Ozone Day event in New Delhi, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Yadav highlighted how ICAP brings together different ministries and sectors to create practical steps for sustainable cooling. This plan tackles India’s growing cooling needs—like air conditioning and refrigeration—while cutting down on harmful environmental effects.

The theme for World Ozone Day 2025, "From Science to Global Action," spotlights how scientific breakthroughs guide policies and spark worldwide teamwork. It shows that joining forces based on solid science can safeguard our planet for generations.

In a pre-recorded message, Yadav celebrated the Montreal Protocol’s success. This global treaty saw scientists and industries team up to wipe out 99% of ozone-depleting substances. Thanks to it, the ozone layer is healing, and it has played a big role in fighting climate change by controlling these harmful chemicals.

Yadav also shared exciting updates on India’s efforts. The ministry is working with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to develop low global warming potential (low-GWP) refrigerants right here at home. These eco-friendly alternatives will help reduce the carbon footprint of cooling technologies.

MoEFCC Secretary Tanmay Kumar urged everyone to look at environmental challenges holistically. He pointed out how the Montreal Protocol proves collective action, driven by science, protects our world. Kumar announced a new push: equipping Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) with training tools to build a skilled workforce in refrigeration and air conditioning. This will create green jobs and boost expertise in sustainable cooling.

Kumar spotlighted other key initiatives too. Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) encourages simple, eco-friendly habits in daily life to build a greener India. He also praised PM Modi’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, which plants trees in mothers’ names to fight climate change and secure a sustainable future.

Joint Secretary Rajat Agarwal kicked off the event by stressing the Montreal Protocol’s vital role in ozone layer protection.

Angela Lusigi, UNDP’s Resident Representative in India, called World Ozone Day a shining example of global cooperation. She lauded India’s progress under the Montreal Protocol, including a 67.5% cut in HCFC production and consumption from baseline levels, and fully phasing out HCFC-141b by 2020. UNDP has supported MoEFCC by providing advanced training equipment to 120 ITIs, linking ozone protection to green skills, jobs, and livelihoods.

These steps show India’s strong commitment to ozone layer protection, climate action, and sustainable development. As we mark World Ozone Day, it’s clear that science, collaboration, and innovation are key to a healthier planet.
