Liam Hemsworth stepped into some big boots when he took over the role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s hit series The Witcher, replacing Henry Cavill after three seasons. But the 35-year-old actor faced a storm of backlash on social media, and he’s now opening up about how he handled the pressure.
Hemsworth admitted the switch felt both thrilling and nerve-wracking, especially with fans voicing their disappointment online. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he shared how he stepped away from social media and the internet for most of last year. "There was quite a bit of noise, and I had to put that aside," he said. "It started to become a distraction. I dealt with that sort of thing in the past a lot and, you know, at the end of the day, I love making movies and I love telling stories and acting. I just don’t want any of that to affect my way of telling the story that I’m trying to tell."
The Witcher team finally addressed Henry Cavill’s sudden exit too. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich explained to Entertainment Weekly that Cavill’s departure came after ongoing behind-the-scenes talks. He wanted to focus on other projects, and the team didn’t want to hold him back. "You don’t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don’t want to do," she said. "I think that’s why it felt like a really symbiotic decision." Cavill dropped the news on Instagram in October 2022, leaving fans stunned.
For Hemsworth, known for his role in The Hunger Games, the casting call came as a total surprise. "It came out of nowhere," he told People magazine. "I was as surprised as anyone." Yet Hissrich revealed that Hemsworth’s name had floated around in The Witcher circles for quite some time.
Hemsworth made it clear he’s a huge fan of Cavill’s work on the show. "I’m a massive fan of what he did in the show" for those first three seasons, he added. With season four in the works, fans are eager to see how Hemsworth brings his take to the monster-hunting world of The Witcher.
