Mahesh Bhatt has always had a knack for spotting and shaping new talent in Bollywood, and now he’s opening up about how he guided Suhrita Das into her big break as a debut director. Their upcoming film, Tu Meri Poori Kahani, hits theaters on September 26, 2025, and Bhatt shared the inspiring story behind it during a chat with in Mumbai’s Andheri West neighborhood.
It all began 11 years ago in Kolkata during the vibrant Durga Puja festival. Bhatt bumped into Suhrita, a hairdresser juggling married life, two kids, and a comfortable setup—but something felt off for her. "She comes from a world where women push boundaries," Bhatt recalls. "She told me about this festival themed around women’s stories, and how she cuts hair with her left hand while dreaming up tales with her right. Despite her settled life, she had this burning passion for writing. I was hooked."
Intrigued, Bhatt asked for samples of her work, and her bold, raw style blew him away. That spark led to real collaboration. During the making of Hamari Adhuri Kahani starring Vidya Balan, Bhatt tapped Suhrita’s personal experiences for a powerful final scene. In it, the lead character confronts her bullying husband and stands her ground—straight from Suhrita’s own "living wounds," as Bhatt puts it. "Most writers pull stories from movies or imagination," he says. "But hers came from real life, and it felt authentic."
They dove deeper, teaming up on a full project that never quite made it to production—Hollywood’s tough breaks at play. Instead, they shifted to TV with the hit show Naamkaran. Suhrita was upfront about her roots in literature, admitting she felt lost in the world of cinema. "Writing for screen means crafting with images and sound, not just words on a page," Bhatt explains. She often felt overwhelmed, like a blank slate, worrying she knew nothing.
Bhatt kept it simple and encouraging: "Hey, none of us start out experts. You learn swimming by jumping in, and screenwriting by doing it." That mindset helped Suhrita grow, turning her literary flair into cinematic gold. Now, with Tu Meri Poori Kahani, this Mumbai-based filmmaker-producer’s mentorship shines through in her directorial debut, proving once again how Bollywood nurtures fresh voices from unexpected places.
