Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has shared a touching tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically died in a scuba diving accident in Singapore. The popular Assamese singer, known for his soulful voice and energetic performances, passed away on Friday at the age of 52.
In an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), Mamata Banerjee called Zubeen her “dear brother” and wrote, “Rest in Rhythm! We will miss you, your mellifluous voice and your indomitable spirit. Music teaches us to fight, to heal and to have faith. Your songs are your legacy and shall remain immortal forever.” Her words highlight how Zubeen’s music inspired millions and left a lasting impact on the Indian music scene.
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore for the Northeast India Festival when the accident happened. According to a statement from the festival organizers, he faced breathing difficulties while scuba diving. Rescuers quickly gave him CPR and rushed him to Singapore General Hospital. Sadly, doctors couldn’t save him, and he was declared dead in the ICU around 2:30 PM IST.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief over Zubeen Garg’s sudden death. In a post on X, PM Modi said he was “shocked” by the news and praised the singer’s rich contributions to music. “His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the PM added.
