Manisha Koirala, the celebrated Bollywood actress and Nepali‑born star, posted a short video on Instagram on Oct. 20 that showed a Nepalese tradition called Kukur Tihar, the “Dog Festival.” In the clip, a black‑and‑white Labrador is wrapped in a bright marigold garland and a priest places a tika on its brow while offering prayers.
The actress wrote in the caption, “Kukur Tihar, the heart of Nepal. Love is celebrated here like nowhere else.” She went on to describe how on this day even street dogs walk proudly, their eyes shining under the garlands and lamps. “It reminds us to love gently, honor deeply and live in harmony with all life,” she added.
Kukur Tihar is the second day of Nepal’s five‑day Tihar festival, which many call Diwali. On this day, dogs—believed to be the messengers of Yama, the god of death—are worshipped for their loyalty. The festival showcases Nepal’s compassion, putting all living beings in a sacred light.
Manisha Koirala grew up in Kathmandu and has long celebrated Nepalese culture. Her grandfather, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, was the first democratically elected prime minister of Nepal. After debuting in the 1991 Bollywood hit Saudagar, she went on to star in classics such as 1942: A Love Story, Dil Se and Khamoshi: The Musical.
In recent years, the actress has returned to the screen with the biopic Sanju and the Canal+ series Heera Mandi directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Despite her busy film career, she frequently shares moments that highlight her Nepali roots, such as the heart‑warming Kukur Tihar video.
