PM Modi expresses grief over tragic idol immersion deaths in MP, announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia relief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his deep sadness over a heartbreaking accident in Madhya Pradesh that claimed lives during a Durga idol immersion ceremony. The tragedy struck in Khandwa district, where a tractor-trolley carrying more than 30 villagers—mostly women and children—plunged into a deep lake, killing at least 10 people, including several kids and teens.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. on October 2 in Jamli village. The vehicle was heading to immerse a Durga idol when a makeshift bridge gave way under its weight. Rescue teams pulled out victims like 18-year-old Arti, 13-year-old Dinesh, 16-year-old Urmila, 15-year-old Sharmila, 20-year-old Ganesh, 16-year-old Kiran, 25-year-old Patlibai, 13-year-old Revsingh, 9-year-old Ayush, and 16-year-old Sangita. Police haven’t confirmed one more death yet, and officials fear at least 20 others could still be missing or trapped.

Among the injured, three people remain in critical condition at Khandwa district hospital. Search efforts stretched into the night, with an 8-year-old girl still unaccounted for and several others fighting for their lives.

In a touching social media message, Modi’s office said: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in an accident at Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM.”

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stepped in too, announcing Rs 4 lakh in aid for each deceased family member’s relatives. He ordered officials to provide top-notch medical care for the hurt and deployed State Disaster Response Force teams along with doctors to help with rescues and recovery in the wake of this Durga Puja mishap.
