In a recent conference in New Delhi, experts from the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) called for stronger teamwork between the government and private businesses to tackle online fraud using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The event spotlighted how AI can protect shoppers in India’s booming retail and e-commerce sectors, where scams have already cost Indians nearly Rs 7,000 crore in just the first five months of 2025.
Senior officials, industry bigwigs, and tech pros gathered to explore AI’s role in boosting consumer trust and securing the digital economy. Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, kicked things off by stressing that “consumer trust forms the foundation of e-commerce.” She pushed for smart, responsible AI tools that spot fraud in real time, making defenses more proactive than reactive. “We need tougher enforcement, but AI can prevent scams before they strike,” she added.
Padma Jaiswal, Secretary to the Government of the Union Territory of Puducherry, warned that rising fraud and fake products could derail e-commerce growth. “For a transparent, scam-free online marketplace, we must enforce stricter rules, standardize products, and ramp up monitoring. AI stands at the heart of this—shielding buyers while keeping fair play for honest sellers,” she said.
Ravi Gandhi, who chairs PHDCCI’s Retail, E-commerce & Consumer Affairs Committee, highlighted how digital shopping and telecom lines are blurring, opening doors to clever threats like phishing, bogus calls, and cyber frauds. “These scams are getting smarter, so our defenses must match. AI and data analytics act as our frontline warriors, flagging suspicious patterns that humans might overlook. To win real consumer confidence, let’s update regulations and embrace these tech innovations,” he urged.
Aman Jain, a PHDCCI member and Amazon’s Director of Public Policy, echoed the need for government, regulators, and companies to join forces. He advocated scaling up AI systems to swiftly detect and wipe out fake products from online platforms, ensuring a safer shopping experience for everyone.
This push for AI in fraud detection comes at a critical time, as e-commerce fraud in India continues to surge, threatening the sector’s massive potential. With collaborative efforts, experts believe we can build a more secure digital future.
