US President Donald Trump has sparked debate in the global film industry with his bold plan to slap a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States. The announcement, posted on Truth Social on Monday, aims to revive Hollywood and protect American jobs from what Trump calls “stolen” opportunities abroad.
Shibasish Sarkar, president of India’s Producers Guild, weighed in from Mumbai, offering a measured take on the move. He believes the tariff targets Hollywood productions that have shifted overseas to places like Canada, Spain, and South Korea to cut costs. “My interpretation is that it’s more about bringing Hollywood production back to the USA,” Sarkar told in a statement. “We’ll wait for the full details in the executive order to understand it better.”
Sarkar also suggested the policy might spare foreign language films screening in the US. “His main goal seems to be safeguarding local jobs and investments,” he added. “Foreign films releasing in America may not face issues, but Trump’s Truth Social post leaves some uncertainty. We need to see the exact executive order to comment fully.”
Trump’s post highlighted his frustration with the US film industry’s challenges. “Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing candy from a baby,” he wrote. “California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!” To fix this “long-time, never-ending problem,” Trump said he would impose the 100% tariff on all foreign-made movies. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT,” he concluded.
Industry watchers are keeping a close eye on how this tariff on movies could ripple through Bollywood, Hollywood, and international cinema, potentially reshaping where films get made and distributed.
