Los Angeles – During a special screening of the 2009 cult hit Jennifer’s Body at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, actress Megan Fox opened up about a rough time early in her career and how the film helped her cope.
Fox, who rose to fame in Transformers, said the paparazzi were brutal when she promoted the movie. “The paparazzi were so ruthless,” she recalled. “They talked down to women, and I was on my way to my car when someone yelled at me. I was just trying to do my job.” The relentless standoff, combined with a wave of negative online reviews, left Fox feeling angry and disillusioned.
She explained that the role of Jennifer, a high‑schooler who turns into a monster after a band sacrifices her, let her channel that frustration. “The script let me embrace a darker, feminist energy that people didn’t want to see,” Fox said. “I could feel the grief and anger simmer backstage and then let it out on set.” She called the experience “cathartic” and said it was a healing release while she was “struggling a lot with fame.”
Fox added that the story echoed her early days in Hollywood. “I was 19 when I hit a big movie,” she noted. “Seeing Jennifer’s story—a girl used and then transformed—felt like a mirror of my own journey.” She reflected that the project gave her permission to explore those deeper emotions, giving her a powerful performance in the film.
The screening was part of the Academy’s celebration of 2000s film culture. Jennifer’s Body, directed by Karyn Kusama, follows Jennifer (Fox) and her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) as their friendship turns deadly. The movie also stars Johnny Simmons, J. K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, Adam Brody, Kyle Gallner, and a young Chris Pratt.
Fox concluded that if she had not taken on the role, she might not have found the clarity and grounding she needed at the time. “That film was very healing for me,” she said, hoping young actors can find similar catharsis in their work.
