Fans in Assam are mourning the loss of Zubeen Garg, the beloved Assamese singer known as the King of Humming. His body arrived at Guwahati airport from Delhi on Sunday, September 21, before heading to his home in the city.
Garg, a cultural icon, filmmaker, and heartthrob to millions, died in a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19. The news has left his followers devastated, with many gathering in Guwahati to light candles and share memories of his soulful songs like “Ya Ali.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita joined fans in paying tribute to the late singer at Delhi’s IGI Airport earlier that day.
The body will lie in state at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati’s Sarusajai area on September 21, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. This gives friends, fans, and admirers a chance to say their final goodbyes. The Assam government urged everyone to help make the farewell dignified and memorable for this son of the soil.
In response to Garg’s sudden death, the state has declared three days of mourning. No official entertainment, ceremonies, or public events will take place during this time, the Chief Minister’s Office announced.
