Los Angeles – On Sunday night a handful of daring moviegoers lined up outside the Culver Theater to shave their heads for a free spot in an early screening of Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film, Bugonia.
The event, which began around 2 p.m., offered a buzzcut in exchange for early admission to the 8 p.m. showing. More than a hundred people queued, but only about 25 got their heads shaved before the doors opened. It was a quirky tribute to the film’s bald central character, played by Emma Stone.
“The trailer promised a bald CEO who gets kidnapped, accused of being an alien trying to destroy Earth,” explained one fan, Matthew Lopez. “I’d been waiting for the movie since the teaser came out, so the chance to get a free haircut and a screening was a no‑lose deal.”
Lopez, who had been growing a full head of hair for a year and a half, walked into the theater sporting a freshly buzzed look. He said the experience was “freeing” and that he’d never felt the cool breeze on his scalp in a while.
Other attendees approached the event with different motives. RIA Frenzel, a freelance actress who often shaves her head, told reporters she wanted a quick cut and a chance to see the film. “It seemed like a unique experience,” she added.
David Vargas, already bald, mentioned his invitation came from a friend who knew he’d already gotten a shave. “I love movies,” he said, “and this was a free screening that I didn’t want to miss.”
Barber KP Kalama, who handled the clippers, said he set a new personal record for the most haircuts in one day during the screening. “It was my first event of this kind, and I’m glad everyone was willing to go along with it,” he said.
Bugonia premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in August and is now slated for a general release this Friday. The English‑language remake of the 2003 South Korean hit Save the Green Planet! stars Emma Stone alongside Jesse Plemons, Stavros Halkios, Aidan Delbis, and Alicia Silverstone. The film’s playful nod to its bald heroine drew the head‑shaving line that thrilled Los Angeles movie fans.
