Nelly Furtado, the Canadian pop star who made global hits like “Promiscuous” and “Maneater,” just told fans she’s calling time on live shows for the foreseeable future.
She shared the decision on Instagram on Friday, posting it while marking the 25th anniversary of her debut album Whoa Nelly!. The screenshot captured a throw‑back photo from 2000 and a newer clip of her performing in Berlin, showing that she still loves the energy of performing even as she steps back.
“I’ve had an amazing career,” the Grammy‑winning singer wrote. “Music has reached a whole new generation of listeners, and seeing people discover my work again feels surreal and joyful.” She added that the experience of getting back on stage has reminded her of the lasting power of good music and has reignited her belief in the magic of performance.
But Furtado said she’s decided to focus on other creative projects and personal growth. “I’m stepping away from performing for the foreseeable future,” she wrote. “I’ll chase different creative endeavors that fit this next phase of my life.” She reminded fans that she will stay true to her roots as a songwriter and will keep writing music.
The singer thanked everyone who has supported her career, from fans and collaborators to her crew. “I’m grateful for the community, the fun, the wonder,” she said. “Thank you for listening, for vibrating with my music, and for coming to my shows.” She also wished the next generation of artists a prosperous and passionate journey on stage.
Furtado’s last album, 7, came out in September 2024 after a seven‑year gap. The record was a family affair, featuring her daughter Nevis Gahunia, who contributed as a co‑producer and co‑writer. In interviews, the singer has described the studio experience as “magical,” noting how the collaboration brought a new connection between parent and child.
Although she’s pausing her touring schedule, the pop star remains active behind the scenes. Fans can look forward to more songwriting, behind‑the‑scenes work, and possibly new music releases in the future. Meanwhile, her decision highlights a shift many artists are making to balance the demands of touring with personal life and new creative ventures.
