Sam Rivers, the co‑founder and bassist of nu‑metal band Limp Bizkit, died on Saturday, Oct. 18 at his home in Florida. He was 48 years old. Calls from the St. Johns County Fire Rescue said emergency crews found him in cardiac arrest and that the death was “attended,” meaning he passed away at home while under the care of a physician or hospice. The exact cause of death is still unclear.

Rivers’ death shocked the music community and fans around the world. The band posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram that day. Fred Durst, Wes Borland, John Otto and DJ Lethal wrote, “Today we lost our brother, our bandmate, our heartbeat.” They recalled Sam as “pure magic” and said his bass lines pulsed through every song. “His spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory,” the post said. The band also used the phrase “once‑in‑a‑lifetime kind of human” to describe him.

The bassist helped found Limp Bizkit in 1994 with Durst in Jacksonville, Florida. He had left the band in 2015 to focus on his health and later revealed that chronic alcohol abuse had caused liver disease. He quit drinking, received medical treatment, and even got a liver transplant before returning to the band in 2018. Rivers performed with Limp Bizkit until his last show at the Leeds Festival in Britain in August this year.
