FTA talks: EU negotiators in New Delhi to deliberate on core trade areas

India and the European Union (EU) will start talks this week on a new free‑trade agreement that covers goods, services, rules of origin and other trade rules. A senior EU team of negotiators will be in New Delhi from November 3‑7 to meet with their Indian counterparts and push the deal forward.

The talks were triggered by a virtual meeting between Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, who also met European Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen. The discussions aim to settle the main outstanding points and create a balanced framework that benefits both sides.

During the visit, Sabine Weyand, Director‑General for Trade at the EU Commission, will meet Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal on November 5‑6 to discuss technical and policy issues. The goal is to advance the agreement toward a modern, robust partnership that reflects the priorities of both India and the EU.

India’s trade secretary said the team’s agenda is to resolve key differences and move the accord to a phase that boosts trade, investment, innovation, and sustainable growth. The talks follow Minister Goyal’s trip to Brussels in late October, where he held forward‑looking discussions with Sefcovic.

“We are committed to a fair and balanced deal that opens new market opportunities,” Goyal told reporters last week. He added that India is negotiating advanced trade deals with the EU and the United States, preparing for a prosperous future.

The India–EU free‑trade agreement is expected to improve market access for goods and services, simplify customs procedures, and foster cooperation across sectors. As the negotiations progress, both sides are working to create a trade framework that supports growth and sustainable development.
